Cooler today, thanks to a NW wind & some rain yesterday, bringing a few more arthropods into the garden.

This is a seed beetle in genus Bruchus. iNaturalist suggests with B. affinis or B. pisorum (pea weevil), but ObsIdentify is convinced it's B. atomarius, & after checking pictures, I tentatively agree.

A small beetle seen in half profile from the front, sitting on top of a sweetpea. The beetle is mostly black with small patches of grey on its head, thorax, and elytra, and more grey underneath on the abdomen. The antennae are mahogany brown for the first half, black for the second half. The fore femora are brown, while the middle legs are all black. The same beetle seen from behind and above on a pink sweetpea flower. The elytra are black with many longitudinal grooves, and a scattering of grey patches. The rear of the abdomen, beyond the wing covers, is a hairy grey with two black sectors cut out on either side. The same beetle seen from the side and behind on a green part of the sweetpea plant. More of the grey undersides of the abdomen are visible, also showing the black middle and rear legs. The black grooved elytra with a few grey patches are seen clearly. The beetle from head-on again, showing the brown and black antennae, plus the brown femora of the forelegs.

This is far below the standard of picture I'd normally share, but since I only managed one distant shot before this tachnid fly skedaddled, it'll have to do.

I'm pretty sure the white & black markings at the end of the red abdomen ID it as Peleteria rubescens.

Hope to see & photograph it again soon, close up.

A tachnid fly seen from behind from a distance, on top of a green and purple flower head. The fly has a lot of grey dusting around its head and thorax, while the abdomen is largely orange, with small black spots at the base of two tergites, and a larger black patch at the end. The latter is bracketed by white patches and there are white lines at the segment edges too. There are two black bristles at the end of the upper segment, and many at the edge of the next one.
