Representation isn't a garnish. It's the machinery by which a stranger in a state with no visible trans population learns who we are without one of us doing the unpaid labor face to face. It's how a fourteen-year-old in a one-stoplight county finds out she isn't broken.

Take the mirror down and you don't get neutrality. You get whatever somebody else hangs on the empty wall.
