My macro hobby started during the pandemic, photographing dragonflies & damselflies in my NL garden.

We don't have many in our DE garden as we're far from standing water 🤷‍♂️

But I had a nice 5 mins by a pond in Windsor Great Park yesterday, which included seeing this common darter (Sympetrum striolatum; 🇩🇪 Große Heidelibelle).

A dragonfly sitting on a brown and green reed next to a pond, seen from behind and from one side. The dragonfly has red compound eyes and a red and green hairy thorax. The abdomen is mostly red with some brown patches and black lines. The wings are clear with dark red-brown pterostigma.

There were also damselflies, including this mating pair of western willow spreadwings (Chalcolestes viridis; 🇩🇪 Westliche Weidenjungfer).

The male is on top holding the female's head with claspers. She will later curl her abdomen up under the male & extract sperm he has deposited at the base of his abdomen.

A pair of damselflies holding on to a brown and green reed. Both damselflies are mostly metallic green, with a characteristic pattern on the side of the thorax. They have clear wings held out sideways, with light brown pterostigma. The top damselfly is a male and is using the end of his curled abdomen to hold the back of the female's head. Her abdomen is currently held vertically down.

So beautiful! When I was a kid I collected insects. But not dragonflies. Their colors depend on living scales, so in death they all turn, like, black.
