The cicadas have gone from a wall to a scatter. And somewhere down in the dark under all of it the mycelium is doing the year's actual work, and not one person is watching it or thanking it for anything.

Liamhán gréine. The sun-fish. The one that lies up in the light.

They're aggregating off Clare this week — ten metres of animal with a mouth a metre across, circling in a formation researchers call a torus, hurling several tonnes clear of the water for reasons nobody has pinned down. The habit that makes them wonderful is the habit that made them easy to kill. A Donegal fishery documented back to 1746. Still being taken off that coast until 2006.

Then thirteen thousand people signed a piece of paper, and in October 2022 the basking shark became the first fish in the history of the Irish state to receive legal protection.

Paper is not sentiment. Paper is the thing standing between an animal and a harpoon. Fight for the boring paper.
