Gezicht op de kermis op de Nieuwmarkt, Amsterdam, Ed van der Elsken, 1957

http://www.rijksmuseum.nl/en/collection/RP-F-2019-299-8-172

The image depicts a vintage black and white photograph of an urban scene at dusk or nighttime, featuring European-style buildings with steep roofs under the soft glow of street lights. In the foreground, there is a lively fairground atmosphere indicated by festive lighting on structures such as tents and marquees that hint at carnival activities. The architecture suggests this may be in Amsterdam's Nieuwmarkt area during an event like "Kermis op de Nieuwmarkt," which was captured by photographer Ed van der Elsken in 1957, a notable figure known for his urban street photography and travel images of the Netherlands' cities.

The image depicts a group of young people gathered closely together. There are five individuals visible, with four appearing to be boys and one girl among them. They stand against what looks like an outdoor fence or barrier railings at night or in low light conditions. The setting seems casual and possibly connected to some event as suggested by the presence of additional onlookers in the background. The person second from the left is wearing a black leather jacket, while others have various styles including denim jackets and different colored shirts. Their hairstyles vary slightly but are indicative of a youthful and perhaps rebellious spirit typical of certain youth subcultures during that era. The boy with his arm around the girl's shoulder seems to be protective or friendly towards her. The photograph is black-and-white, which lends it a timeless quality and suggests it may have been taken several decades ago when color photography was less common in casual snapshots. The foc

The image shows a black and white photograph of an unusual animal figure, which appears to be a calf with the head of a dog. The calf is positioned on what looks like a piece of wood or board that has text written in Dutch: "Mongoosekalf" meaning monkey-calf", "met 'Hondenkop'" (with dog-head"), and it mentions being made by someone named Boer Harms, dated April 3, 1952. The calf figure seems to be part of a display or exhibit as there's another animal-like object partially visible in the background on the right side. The overall context suggests that this image may have been taken at an exhibition where unusual and possibly humorous creations were displayed. It is likely connected with Ed van der Elsken, mentioned in the alt text reference for additional information about this photograph.

This black and white photograph captures a candid moment at what appears to be an evening social gathering or event. A group of people is seen in the background, with some individuals standing out due to their proximity to the camera lens and their expressive body language. In the foreground, on the left side, there's a man who seems blurred as if he were moving quickly through the crowd. His expression is not clearly visible but suggests motion or surprise. In the center of the image stands another individual, possibly female based on clothing and hairstyle, looking directly at the camera with an expressive facial gesture that might be interpreted as speaking or reacting to something out-of-frame. To her right, there's a person in dark attire wearing what appears to be a suit jacket with a pin on it. This figure has their head slightly tilted downward but is also facing towards the camera. The image captures a historical winter scene of people engaging in outdoor activities on a snow-covered canal. Individuals are scattered across the frozen water, with some walking and others using what appear to be ice skates or perhaps early forms of rollerblades. The setting is urban, as evidenced by rows of buildings lining both sides of the canal. In the distance stands an iconic structure that resembles St. Nicholas Church in Amsterdam, suggesting this scene takes place there during a winter period when snowfall was not uncommon. The photo is monochrome and shows signs of age with its grainy texture, which may indicate it's several decades old. The lighting seems to come from overcast skies or possibly street lamps, as the overall atmosphere has a muted quality typical of cold weather conditions at dusk or dawn during winter months in Europe. It is rendered as a black and white photograph with high contrast, emphasizing textures like wet pavement reflecting light and puddles suggesting recent rain. In the foreground, several individuals are engaged in dancing; their movements fluid and dynamic. The image is a black and white portrait of an individual with striking, voluminous hair styled in multiple directions. The hairstyle has been described as reminiscent of the "beehive" or punk era fashion popularized in the 1970s. The person's facial features are partially visible; they have intense eyes looking directly at the camera, and a hint of their cheek is seen beneath an arm that appears to be touching their face. There is no discernible background detail as it seems cropped tightly around the subject, emphasizing the hairstyle and expression over any contextual information.
