That bright red object in the carport is, amazingly, their car.

A corner shot of a mid century modern house with mustard yellow siding, white trim, a flat roof and salmon pink soffit under the roof overhang. The front wall of the house is covered halfway up with textured sand colored stone. A nice weeping birch. Most that I have seen are diseased and variously trimmed to unshapely messes. Tbh, they are short-lived trees and may have been fashionable 40 or so years ago.

A weeping birch growing in a front yard, next to a wooden fence, dominates the Japanese maples and crabapples around it. The three part trunk is mostly white, with black and gray patches. The leafy branches, about 20 feet up (~7m) droop down and form a nice cascade of green backlit by the morning sun. The sidewalk leads to a tunnel of small street trees and front yards full of shrubs.

Another candelabrum tree, Thuja plicata, redcedar, on a street corner. It overpowers the house next to it and intimidates pedestrians. As it should.

A multi-trunk redcedar looms over a sidewalk in a Seattle neighborhood. The tree has a rough red-gray bark. I count eight smaller trunks rising from the base, most shooting straight up. There are a couple of trunks leaning right and left. A couple of trunk-sized branches are growing out of main stems. There is a foam of English ivy at the base of the cedar, and you can see the brightly lit sidewalk off to the left leading away from the tree.

A cluster of round white dogwood berries droops down amid the bush's oval green leaves. There is a dead leaf on the ground, turning bright yellow. The leaf and berry stems are a somber red, which gets brighter in winter. A pale tan crane fly has landed on a green dogwood leaf. It has very long legs that reach out beyond its translucent, golden, veined wings, balancing it in the middle. Its body is long and looks very fragile.

The henhouse is all spiffed up. The hens were hiding in the shade. We now know their names are Willow, Sequoia and Cypress. They have lovely hanging plant baskets to beautify their home. I wonder if they are laying?

The chicken coop we admired a couple of months ago has had some home improvements. The spacious rectangular coop is built of wood, with a nice chicken wire cage, and a wooden henhouse with a nice ladder. There are a few chicken necessities in the coop. And now it has two lovely decorative plant baskets, with an array of colorful leafy and viney plants. There are three ceramic plaques on the exterior wall, with a chicken image and the names of the hens: Willow, Sequoia and Cypress! The support beam of the coop also has a plaque showing several hens and roosters. The hens themselves are resting in the dark shade. A close up of the henhouse, with the three name plaques, and one hanging foliage basket. This is classy housing for what probably are well-loved pets.

A sweep of clusters of reddish orange rosehips amid lush blue green leaves leads up to a morning blue sky. I have never seen the redleaf rose with red leaves except in fall! I have seen photos of a few with some purplish leaves, but they are reliably blue-green, which is what glauca means, btw

I didn't think to photograph the netting over the sidewalk meant to catch apples rather than have them splat on the ground! BTW, most lawn areas in Seattle look like this now, except for people who love green lawns

I did check the apples and they weren't too wormy, but quite small. A small cardboard hand-printed sign by the sidewalk says FREE APPLES. Nearby, on a dry, tattered grass street border, a cardboard box has a few yellow and red apples waiting for someone... A slight mystery? Monty, a small gray shih tzu, checks out a stick with a small apple near by. Off to the left, an empty crumpled paper Costco bag rests on the dry, tattered grass sidewalk strip. There's a handwitten sign, asking "Caution! don't hurt the inoccient apples! 😊" Does this mean don't use the stick to hit the apples? I resume our walk bemused. Monty fails to enlighten me.

Today's P-Patch visit: the bean teepee in the children's garden is grown! One of the many fruit tree arches in the patch! A cow dog eating grass!

The Children's Garden has a tall teepee made of a stick frame covered by scarlet runner beans. The teepee is set in a circle of seats and benches inviting young and old to sit for a moment. The seating and teepee are surrounded by small flower and vegetable beds. It feels very lush in a droughty city. The P-Patch patch has many trails between patches, and some go through shady fruit tree arches like this one under a couple of old apple trees. There is a rose with bright pink blossoms growing up on the left side of the arch. The left side is also where the compost bins (out of sight here) are, so it is a bit weedy but very green. Someone's flower bed and vegetable beds are on the right side of the trail. Beyond the arch there are large shade trees in a bright blue sky. A silly gray shih tzu at the end of a gray leash is busily chomping on grass (cow dog!) bordering a flower and vegetable patch. There is a low fence around the patch, which helps keep dogs and stray humans off the beds. Fortunately, Monty is well behaved and doesn't wander off trail even if there are no fences.

A pretty switchgrass (Panicum virgatum) a Great Plains and eastern seaboard prairie grass, used as a border. The colors will intensify as autumn progresses, then bleach out to gold straw for winter. A great ornamental.

Switchgrass, also commonly known as panic grass, makes a nice feathery border plant along an urban sidewalk. The 5 to 6 foot tall grass stems are green and shades of blue. The long blades are turning to fall colors, with red, orange, and purple leaves mingling in the still green masses. Rosy red feathery seed heads create a cloudy haze at the top. In the background you can see a bit of a white house, and green trees throwing shade further along on the sidewak.

Fading in the summer heat. I always am fascinated by colors intermixing, fading into each other, and the gradients that develop in plants.

What were once clusters of vivid blue-purple hydrangea blossoms are now fading. A ribbon of round clusters in shades of blue, lilac, green, white and purple deploys across the photo, with the still bright green leaves contrasting with the pastel fading colors.
