"The Campbells Are Coming"

A lovely day trip in our EV yesterday to Dollar Glen in Clackmannanshire and a visit to Castle Campbell.

One of the most dramatically positioned and best-preserved tower houses in Scotland, it was built in the 1400s for the earls and dukes of Argyll, chiefs of Clan Campbell.

The weather was perfect for walking the area, and the views from the top of the tower were simply breathtaking.

A colour photo of a brown and grey stone castle nestled in a leafy glen. Old trees and green slopes are surrounding it, and in the background is a view of distant woods and fields. The roof of the tower house has a flagpole on it, flying the Scottish Saltire. There are also slate roofs, chimneys and battlements. A colour photo of a detail in a vaulted ceiling. On either side of a stone beam are two grotesques, carved in the shape of unhuman faces. The one on the right is of the Green Man, both have wide open eyes. Their mouths are holes from which lamps were hung. A colour photo of a view from the battlements of the castle. On the left are stone windows, it isn't clear from the shot but they have sash window panes. A slate roof is angled above. Slightly below is another roof with a row of chimney pots, all are closed. The woodland beyond drops dramatically to the valley below. A colour photo of the view from the castle roof looking down into the valley below. Immediately below are grey stone walls, broken at the tops where a roof once covered a cloistered walkway. Beyond that are manicured gardens with embedded ha-ha walls. Below that are thoughtfully placed benches. The ancient woodland stretches away into the distance, lush and verdant.

I’m not done yet with high-key photos of people in front of a moving ICE train. So here’s another photo on the topic for . In this shot, I captured the transition from the green to the red stripe and placed a person there. To make the reflection on the sign legible, I also flipped the photo horizontally.

Sunset Snow

Thirty minutes before sundown in mid-February, and we headed towards Borðeyri in Hrútafjörður, north-western Iceland.

It'd been a clear and sunny day with lots of sun halos but the temperature hadn't climbed much above -15°C since the previous day.

Before settling in for the night, we decided to take a short drive along the shore of the fjord to admire the sunset colours.

A colour photo of a winter landscape under a mostly cloudy sky. The viewpoint is from a vehicle taking a metalled road down towards the side of a fjord. There are yellow snow poles on either side of the icy black road. Not far ahead the road curves away to the left across a small bridge which has been installed below the road deck. The dark blue waters of the fjord are slightly ruffled and have an edging of white ice as well as small icy patches in the water. The sunlight from the left is very low and is casting a pale pastel pink onto the snow banks facing that direction.

Would You Like Ice With That?

Early October, and we're at Fellsfjara, also known as "Diamond Beach".

Jökulsárlón is full of icebergs today, and the high tide has lifted some from the glacial lagoon and swept them out to sea. The waves have deposited large pieces of the ice on the black sand and the tide is now ebbing.

Some of the beached icebergs are still saturated with water, and are a lovely turquoise colour. A helpful visitor has provided scale.

A colour photo of a black beach, near the tide line. The sky is grey and overcast and in the background is a man-made breakwater constructed of large boulders. People can be seen standing on it and, where it extends out into the sea, lots of grounded icebergs. In the foreground on the wet black sand near the waterline are small pieces of ice and one large iceberg is standing upright. The ice is turquoise and quite transparent, the light is being distorted through its many curves and ripples. A person wearing a green coat, yellow hat, and beige trousers is standing next to it, and the iceberg is taller than the person, about 2.4 metres of ice.
