“Wasserlandschaft” (Waterscape)

Bodies of water seen while flying over Utah, including the striking red surface of the Great Salt Lake.

View of Utah’s Great Salt Lake from an airplane window. A brown, mountainous landscape sits between the wavy shoreline of a vivid red lake below and a clear blue sky above, with a distant cumulus cloud floating on the horizon. The airplane’s wing pushes in from left frame. The lake’s red color is caused by the pigmentation of halophilic (salt-loving) bacteria, which thrive in the high salinity of the water.

Another view of a Utah landscape from an airplane window. Flat islands of green and brown, connected by a web of narrow causeways, sit in what looks like waterways or a collection of small rivers and lakes — or perhaps these are the drying-up remnants of a larger body of water. Mountains sit at the horizon under a blue sky with clouds.
