Lust for Life was release 49 years ago today so I decided to look up why they chose the cheesy photo for the album cover. It's not all that interesting really, but I saw an article about great opening bass lines:

Spoiler Alert! The greatest opening bass line is from Cannonball by The Breeders. It's an interesting read about how that opening happened.

But Cannonball is an unusual song on The Last Splash because it's musically brilliant, very original, yet it sits on an otherwise pretty poor album.

Yes, the album has some other good songs but nothing of that calibre and in my opinion the album has too many dull songs on it.

If only they'd worked on the rest of the album as much as they did for Cannonball.

@lydiaconwell@todon.nl I was reading your opinion on The Last Splash and I disagreed, but, because I have the album and you good taste in music, I decided to give it another listen. I still disagree, but I think I understand where you're coming from. Most songs seem incomplete (i.e., they are very short, with barely any lyrics or musical development), as if they just came up with a cool sound and recorded it raw instead of baking it a little, like they did with Cannonball.
