A common flower fly (hover fly) perched on a shiny green leaf. The insect has a stripy black and yellow body, shiny brown/gold area above that, then brown/red eyes. Its wings are see through. A falcon seen from below, wings spread wide against blue sky. We think it is a kestrel, with black markings around and below its eyes, and a black band running across the tip of its tail feathers. A curious bushy yellow, green and red fluffy spherical growth on a green stem with green leaves around. We think it’s a wild rose. A green veined white butterfly perched on a green leafy plant. It has green veins under its white wings and brown veins on the upper wings as more visible here.

Ein Großer Kohlweißling hängt an einer Distelblüte und saugt daran. Er hat die Flügel zusammengelegt. Der Betrachter sieht ihn von der Seite. Auf dem Hinterflügel des Schmetterlings ist ein kleines Insekt unterwegs. Die Imagines des Großen Kohlweißlings erreichen eine Flügelspannweite von 60 Millimetern. Der schwarze Apikalfleck an den Vorderflügeln reicht bis zu Ader 3. Die weiblichen Falter tragen auf den Vorderflügeln in den Zellen 1b und 3 schwarze Diskalflecke, die bei den männlichen Faltern völlig fehlen. Die Unterseite der Hinterflügel der Weibchen sind zumeist etwas kräftiger bestäubt als die der Männchen.

This is a large butterfly with dark brown to black wings with some orange, yellow and blue dots on the underside of its hindwings. It is a tiger swallowtail butterfly, the so-called "black morph." All black morphs are female. It is nectaring on a group of small bright purple flowers, tall ironweed (a fall wildflower). This is also a tiger swallowtail, this one has the usual yellow wings with black edges. The edges of its wings are quite ragged, and I cannot see any colors on its hindwings, so I think it is a male. It is nectaring on a big, spiky lavender thistle flower. This is not a butterfly, but a moth. It's small to medium in size and is often mistaken for a baby hummingbird, since it often hovers like a hummingbird. In fact, it is a hummingbird clearwing moth (Hemaris thysbe). It has reddish brown wings with clear "windows" in them and it has an olive colored body. To me it looks more like a flying shrimp than a hummingbird. It is hovering next to a big, spiky lavender thistle flower. This is a large Monarch butterfly. It has orange wings with black veins and edges and white dots along the edges of the wings and on its body. It just launched itself from the red clover flower below it when I took this picture.

Profile view of a butterfly feeding from a group of closely clustered small flowers. The wing patterns resembles that of the Monarch butterfly (they belong to the same butterfly genus). The wings are mostly orange, with a brown and white patch at the tip of the forewing. Unlike the Monarch, the veins on the wings are not outlined in black. The edge of the wings are lined with a series of small white spots with a black border.
