I've been so busy lately that I've not had much time to take photos. But here are some insects. #

This medium sized yellow butterfly with brown edges to its wings (as viewed from the topside of the wings) is a clouded sulphur butterfly. It's nectaring on some kind of catmint. You usually don't see the topside of this butterfly's wings, as they are usually closed at rest. Here is a small dragonfly with bright green eyes, a powder blue abdomen and a black and yellow thorax in a obelisk posture (head down, butt up) on a hot day. It is a male blue dasher dragonfly. This large dragonfly has a dark body and wings with brown and white patches on them. It is a male widow skimmer dragonfly. I saw this rather large black. white and yellow caterpillar climbing all over some not-very-healthy-looking milkweed. It is a Monarch caterpillar, a late instar I would guess based on its size.

A closeup of the head of a common green darner dragonfly (Anax junius). I've always loved the marking that looks like an extra eye spot.

Here's a wandering glider (Pantala flavescens) that landed right in front of me in the front yard. They are the most widespread dragonfly species in the world and have the longest known insect migrations.

An early afternoon walk just before heavy rain came. Very little wildlife except a group of Common Darters that were kind enough to pose for me.

A Common Darter dragonfly poses nicely side on so all its body can be seen as it sits on a flower seed stalk. A Common Darter dragonfly posing nicely but refusing to turn around as it sits on a flower seed stalk in the patch of sunlight. A relatively close shot of a Common Darter dragonfly resting on a dead twig in a sunny patch.

Flame skipper (Libellula saturata)

Shot with a 85mm lens (Nikon DX/APS-C), f/34, 1/250s. Got a few good shots of him before the dogs ran up and scared it off. Having the dogs with us adds an extra level of difficulty to wildlife photography, but I wouldn't want to leave them behind.
