"Ethereal Pines" for

Torrey Pine trees (Pinus torreyana) and coastal sage scrub in dense morning fog at Torrey Pines State Natural Reserve in San Diego, California.

I have photographed these trees many many times already but they remain an irresistible subject, especially with fog!

A lovely early September morning, and we're starting out from Ísafjörður for a day in the Westfjords of Iceland.

It's cool and quite humid without even a breeze, and scarves of cloud are hugging the mountains around the port. Briefly, before the sun rises far enough to warm the moist air, they emphasise the contours of the slopes beautifully.

Looking south towards Engidalur, the mountain on the left is Kirkjubólsfjall at 706 meters (2316 feet).

A colour photo of a landscape at the edge of a large body of water. The fjord in the foreground is reflecting grey and is slightly rippled. Chevrons of water birds can be seen in the distance. Along the opposite shore are numerous buildings, some farm and some domestic, with large spaces between them. The gentle curves of a glacial valley are obvious in profile. Above them and further up the valley, at least two large waterfalls can be seen. At a higher level, a stripe of cloud is obscuring a specific band at the same height on each mountain flank. Some of the peaks are visible above the mists as curved isolated islands in a sea of cloud. It's very lovely.

From a quiet August morning many years ago, when I went for an early walk with the dog at Wöhrsee, the city lake of Burghausen in Bavaria, Germany...
