Before the iPhone, the Polaroid camera let people instantly chronicle their lives. Along with instant photo mania, its company culture became the model for Silicon Valley. Mr. Polaroid is the story of Edwin Land, the man behind the camera.
My Thoughts:
My first camera as a child was a Polaroid (my photo of Shea Stadium in 1986 is already on this blog), and later in life I worked with the archival records of Polaroid Corporation. This short documentary made for the American Experience on PBS is an introduction to the Polaroid Corporation and its leader Edwin Land. The documentary frames Land as the model of the tech industry leader, focused on science and developing products before the customers even know they need them. Land’s biggest innovation, instant photography, made Polaroid an extremely successful and influential corporation.
The documentary highlights how instant photography freed people in the Black and LGBTQ communities to take more personal photos without the fear of interference by a photo processor. At Polaroid, Land also hired women to work in tech positions, including Meroë Morse, who is frequently highlighted in this documentary. After the assassination of Martin Luther King, Land also made and kept a commitment to hire more Black employees.
On the downside, Land’s workaholic convictions left very little room for work/life balance at Polaroid. Worse, Polaroid contracted with the government of South Africa to produce photos used in the administration of apartheid, which resulted in a protest against the company lead by Black Polaroid employees. In his later years, Land dedicated much of his time to the failed Polavision movie camera and personally involving himself in a lawsuit against Kodak instead of leaving it to Polaroid’s legal team. Land was forced out as Chairman of Polaroid, but the company would not survive long without its founder.
This movie features good interviews, archival footage, and lots of photographs, but its biggest flaw is that it’s too short. An in-depth exploration of Edwin Land’s life and work, the concepts of corporate social responsibility explained with the Polaroid Corporation as a case study, or a history of the art and social significance of Polaroid photography are all topics that could be subjects of a full-length documentary, but only touched upon in Mr. Polaroid.
