The Roman city at Wroxeter, known as Viroconium Cornoviorum started as a settlement that grew up around a Roman Fort near the end of the Watling Street Roman Road.

It's thought to have become the 4th largest Roman settlement in Britain. By the 4th Centry, it was in decline however, and by the 5th the city centre had been abandoned.
