This library is so beautiful and unique. It was designed by Gunnar Birkerts and is known as the "Castle of Light" or the "Glass Mountain". It was inspired by Latvian folklore and literature. In traditional local legends, a sunken castle of light rises from the depths once the nation breaks free from foreign oppression and regains its freedom. It was originally designed in 1989 as Latvia was breaking away from the USSR.
When it opened thousands of people formed a human chain from the old library and passed the books hand to hand to relocate them to their new home in this building.
There were also millions of books that were in storage in different buildings around the city and now they're all able to be in one beautiful place.
I just really love libraries.
