Kept Forever in Loving Hearts.

Lobethal Cemetery, Lobethal, South Australia.

Lobethal General Cemetery was established on 26 October 1886 on Crown Land Section 5162 in the Hundred of Onkaparinga. Its creation followed the closure of two earlier cemeteries near Lobethal’s Lutheran churches, which were deemed too close to domestic water sources by the South Australian Board of Health. The new site, located about two miles from town, was chosen to ensure sanitary burial practices.

Today, Lobethal Cemetery holds nearly 2,000 memorials and remains a quiet testament to the region’s settler history, faith, and resilience.

Black and white photograph focusing on a child's grave amongst closely spaced cemetery plots. The central headstone is an upright marble tablet featuring a carved heart emblem dedicated to Christopher Maurice Kay, who passed away in 1979 aged six years. In front of the marker, a stone kerb borders a gravel bed with a small square vase inscribed Chris. Tilted and upright neighbouring headstones, including one for infant Malcolm Muster from 1944, cluster around the plot beneath the dark foliage of an evergreen bush. The Gardens of the Silent watermark appears in the bottom right corner.
