The Silent Watcher of the Plains.

Eudunda Cemetery, Eudunda, South Australia.

The Eudunda Cemetery is located on Peep Hill Road in the regional South Australian town of Eudunda, an area originally settled in the late 1860s.

The first recorded burial in the official cemetery took place on May 23, 1884 (with Mary Lydia Baetge, who passed away on May 20, 1884, being among the earliest entries).

Interestingly, a few bodies were interred at the site before the official layout and plan of the cemetery were formally surveyed.

A vertical white marble headstone stands in a dry, sunlit rural cemetery, bearing the inscription for Mary Lydia Barton. In the background, a sparse wire fence stretches across golden grass under a bright sky. A weathered metal flower container sits on the reddish soil to the left, and the subtle "Gardens of the Silent" watermark appears in the bottom right corner.

Soaring Pinnacles and Sacred Memories.

Lobethal Cemetery, Lobethal, South Australia.

Lobethal General Cemetery was established on 26 October 1886 on Crown Land Section 5162 in the Hundred of Onkaparinga. Its creation followed the closure of two earlier cemeteries near Lobethal’s Lutheran churches, which were deemed too close to domestic water sources by the South Australian Board of Health. The new site, located about two miles from town, was chosen to ensure sanitary burial practices.

Today, Lobethal Cemetery holds nearly 2,000 memorials and remains a quiet testament to the region’s settler history, faith, and resilience.

A tall polished granite obelisk rises prominently in the centre on a tiered stone base. In the foreground to the right stands an arched marble headstone inscribed in German for Carl Ferdinand Kumnick and Johanne Eleonore Kumnick, decorated with a relief carving of an angel beside a cross. To the far right, another pedestal is surmounted by a sculpted draped urn. The Gardens of the Silent logo is set in the bottom right corner.

Rückblick 15.09.2019 • Necropolis, Glasgow

W. G. Sebald, Campo Santo

Kapunda Cemetery, Kapunda, South Australia.

Kapunda is home to two primary historical cemeteries: the Kapunda Cemetery (the main town cemetery) and the St John’s Catholic Cemetery, which is located a few kilometres outside of town and carries a more somber, legendary history.

Kapunda Cemetery serves as a record of the pioneers who built the copper mining town.

Rest After Long Labours.

Morgan Cemetery has its origins in the late 19th century river trade era, and its early history is unusually dramatic. The cemetery was established in 1889, later coming under council control.

One of the most well known stories is the identity of the cemetery’s first interment:

A Royal Navy surveyor named Harvey reportedly speculated while helping prepare the cemetery grounds about who would be the first person buried there.

The next day, he drowned in the Murray River and became the cemetery’s first burial, a story long repeated in local heritage accounts.
