Whispers of the Past Across the Arid Plain.

Morgan Cemetery has its origins in the late 19th century river trade era, and its early history is unusually dramatic. The cemetery was established in 1889, later coming under council control.

One of the most well known stories is the identity of the cemeteryโ€™s first interment:

A Royal Navy surveyor named Harvey reportedly speculated while helping prepare the cemetery grounds about who would be the first person buried there.

The next day, he drowned in the Murray River and became the cemeteryโ€™s first burial, a story long repeated in local heritage accounts.

A high contrast black and white photograph showcasing a tiered marble cross monument for Albert E. Cole. The cross is inscribed with the word Resting in a decorative band, mounted on a three stepped base atop a litter of twigs and pine needles. The surrounding cemetery grounds, iron fenced plots, and distant headstones are softly focused in the dappled midday sunlight.
