Forty minutes from my kitchen, a guard on nine dollars an hour was handed a policy nobody wrote down and sent to audit what women were wearing.

Two shirts said trans women don't belong in the game. One said trans kids do. All three were treated as a matched set, which is the part that should keep you up. The equivalence is not a mistake in the machine. It is the machine.

One shirt is a life. The other is an opinion about a life.

Then: a registry that said no, a long administrative grind, two constitutional injunctions, and three years and ten months of being told their family was not the kind the state writes down. On Friday, in Santa Cruz, Fabiana Banzer and Scarlett Rocha were recorded as married. Banzer announced it on Facebook the next day the way you'd announce a birthday.

Article 63 still defines marriage as a woman and a man. This was won case by case, not by statute. It is a crack in a wall.

David Aruquipa, whose own union was the 2020 ruling that made this possible, refused to let last week be called a beginning. He called it a continuity.

Forty states. That's where we're over ten percent — Georgia, Arizona, Texas, the ground they keep telling their mailing list we abandoned.

Twelve percent of every adult in this country. Pulled from 2.4 million answers to a federal survey, analyzed and published by the Human Rights Campaign Foundation — and then the questions came off roughly 360 federal data collections. They funded the survey. The survey found us. They ate the scorecard.

Fifty-three percent of that number is under thirty-five. It isn't peaking. It's loading.

Fifty-six percent of trans and nonbinary students go to a school with a discriminatory policy written down somewhere in the building.

Ninety-seven percent of them can still name one adult in there who has their back. In this climate. With this many legislatures hunting them. They found somebody anyway.

And the researchers went and measured what that adult is worth. Five supportive teachers or fewer: 3.20 grade average. Eleven or more: 3.42. Isolated from other queer kids: 3.23. Well-connected: 3.42.

That's not a warm feeling. That's a dose-response curve, and it means the thing that saves queer kids is the cheapest line in the entire education budget — one adult, repeatedly, refusing to look away.

Here's the part nobody reported. Between the hour the glass broke and the hour anyone heard about it, a woman named Elyse Doyle-Martinez was already mixing paint. Longtime customers turned up

Sunday with plywood and a drill. Erik Daniells, who co-owns the place, said it hurt to be targeted and then said the community had been amazing.

Then the store cut a check to Elevate Queer Yolo and the Davis Phoenix Coalition and told the vandal the money came as a direct result of his hate. You did this.

The federal rule takes it away on the 13th of October. Massachusetts looked at its Affirming Health Care Trust Fund and said fine — we'll eat the cost.

Eight and a half million in a trust fund isn't a moral victory. It's a levee. One state can carry this. One state should not have to.

And through every bit of it we keep doing the unglamorous, immortal thing — showing up at the pharmacy counter, filing the appeal, driving somebody's kid four states to a clinic, marrying each other in a country that will honor it and getting told no by the country that won't, and marrying each other again anyway.
