I’m waiting, patiently, to see what emerges out of these pods on Exoplanet 73525. One has already flown, so another must emerge soon. Here’s for not reading the travel book, not watching the videos, of having something as a surprise. To see something hatch, something emerge, something you have never seen before.

A photo of a flower. A detail photo of a flower that is still in the pod state. But not how you think. It looks like one flower, with the centre sitting there waiting for the petals that have not grown yet. That does not make any sense. But really it is a collection of purple and yellow pods all mushed together to make up the flower. A few of the pods on the outside have tiny purple petals growing out of the open pods, but really it is still not open. The middle looks like a collection of tennis balls, with the seam showing where they will open. Of the pods in the middle, there is one that has opened. Is showing the opened purple petals, which shows how the other pods are closed and how they will open. Could be seeds on a foreign planet. That is bad writing, I’ll have to work on that.

I’m waiting, patiently, to see what emerges out of these pods on Exoplanet 73525. One has already flown, so another must emerge soon. Here’s for not reading the travel book, not watching the videos, of having something as a surprise. To see something hatch, something emerge, something you have never seen before.

This plant is floating innocently through space. While it survives on minerals, it looks to be opening their jaws, with a little spark in the middle to lure in oblivious prey. But it’s all just this photograph, and the angle, and a trick of the light of the nearby sun. This is just a space plant, floating in vacuum, collecting dust to survive. No hidden monsters today.

This is the brown dead husk of a plant pod. It was once green and about the size of my big toe. It was once held together, in green and pleasant ways, but now that it is done it’s duty, (I’m assuming to spread it’s seed) then it has turned brown and the two halves of the pod are open. They are open in such a way that it looks like the jaws of a huge monster, and there is something hanging in the middle of the jaw, like some deep sea fish who uses a light to draw in their prey. The background is black so it could be in space.

On Exoplanet 82546 the Blatteus Beetle builds their nest to imitate the local Blatteus Bird. (not the best naming convention, but there you go) The Blattus Bird is seriously territorial and aggressive, attacking all who come near. Because other birds avoid the area, the beetle can rear their eggs and pupa in relative nest peace. I love this part: the beetle even goes so far as collecting white sticks and smearing purple moss on the sticks to give them the distinctive purple beak colour of the bird. How did this beetle evolve to do this? it’s just amazing.

This is a plant with a flower. Well, a sort of flower. An unopened flower. There is a round bulb, about the shape of a rugby ball, that is brown and covered in things that look like fake eyelashes. A whole bunch of symmectrical eyelashes attached to the outside of this round brown bulb. Then there is the beginning of a flower sticking out of the top. But the flower is bent over so it is pointing sideways. The petals of the flower are white and purple and long and thin. They have not opened, but are sticking out of the bulb and are all pointing in the same direction, in a clump. The way they are sitting, it looks like they could be a beak of a bird. It looks like it could be thrown together, rather than specifically made.

Obviously an enormous carnivorous plant on Exoplanet 83635. It looks so innocent, doesn’t it.

A photo of a plant. But it looks like the head of a man who is losing his hair. No, it does not look anything like that. The plant has a solid round centre, and off this centre are thirty or so white fronds that are thin and white and growing outwards. They are soft and floppy. In the middle, where they attach to the centre, they fade to green. Maybe one of those weird child’s play balls where there are tentacles coming out of the ball for some reason. Or a carnivorous plant.

Shallow Focus is a Disease in Movies – There is a new trend that has influence the production of movies in Hollywood (AKA Commiewood) for many years now and it has literally become a disease which made the viewing of movies undesirable. The disease is shallow focus which occurs when the area of sharpness in front of a camera lens is very narrow which results in blurry backgrounds. Looking down on the skeletal remains of tree roots on Exoplanet 67393. I spent a beautiful day wandering around the remains of these trees. This planet, when it was blossoming into a planet with intelligent life, (that is, we think, there were a few things in the ocean who almost had a brain) was hit by an asteroid that must have been huge. Rather than, like on earth, wiping out the dinosaurs and allowing some tiny mammals to thrive, this one wiped out everything. Creating a dead planet where nothing, not even microbes, could live. These huge tree root have been sitting here for millions of years, and they are not petrified, they are exactly as they were, because there is nothing to break them down. There is something beautifully haunting about wandering, cemetery like, through abandoned things.

Looking down on the skeletal remains of tree roots on Exoplanet 67393. A day sitting on my ship, with that weight on me. That deep weight of the horrible worlds that takes so much effort to stand up against. The world below me is barren and lifeless. There is no one to blame for this. When life was just getting a foothold it was struck by an asteroid that was so large it changed the composition of this planet, killing everything. Even the microbes that make life. There are only a few places where there is a fleeting glimpse that there was once life on this planet. This is one of those glimpses. A photo taken from space, of tree roots that are millions of years old, but they are not petrified, they are exactly as they were when they died. There is nothing to break them down. No life at all. I could go down and visit this planet, but today, and maybe tomorrow, I’ll just curl up with my book, and maybe not have this weight soon.

Looking down on the skeletal remains of tree roots on Exoplanet 67393. A day sitting on my ship, with that weight on me. That deep weight of the horrible worlds that takes so much effort to stand up against. The world below me is barren and lifeless. There is no one to blame for this. When life was just getting a foothold it was struck by an asteroid that was so large it changed the composition of this planet, killing everything. Even the microbes that make life. There are only a few places where there is a fleeting glimpse that there was once life on this planet. This is one of those glimpses. A photo taken from space, of tree roots that are millions of years old, but they are not petrified, they are exactly as they were when they died. There is nothing to break them down. No life at all. I could go down and visit this planet, but today, and maybe tomorrow, I’ll just curl up with my book, and maybe not have this weight soon.
