OLD THINGS BELONG TO SPERANZA

Winter melted into a bright, warm spring in the hills of Speranza. The green trees grew new leaves, and the village square was full of people enjoying the sun.

Inside La Pagina che Fa le Fusa, the air smelled like sweet orange tea and fresh baking. The shop bell rang with a happy sound, and Elio walked in.

He did not look like the stressed, rushed chef from the city anymore. He wore a simple white apron and carried a warm, covered plate. He walked to the heavy oak counter with a big, relaxed smile.

“Good morning, Moira,” Elio said. He set the plate down and lifted the cover. “I brought us lunch. I made traditional piadina bread, but I tried something new. I put fresh avocado directly into the dough while I was rolling it, instead of using it as a filling. It makes the bread perfectly soft, but the soul of the recipe is still the old way.”

Moira took a piece of the warm, pale-green bread. She tasted it and closed her eyes happily. “It is wonderful, Elio. You have finally learned how to mix the new with the old.”

They sat together in the comfortable velvet chairs, drinking hot tea and eating the piadina. They were no longer rivals. They were a team. Elio often came to the tea shop to ask Moira about wild herbs, and Moira often went to his kitchen to taste his slow-cooked soups.

Across the room, behind the heavy wooden counter, Moira had built a beautiful new glass display box on the wall.

Inside the glass box, resting safely on red velvet, were the two magic books. The dusty blue cover of The Days of the Dreams sat right next to the shining white leather of its twin. The silver sleeping cats on the covers looked completely at peace.

The people of Speranza did not know the scary truth about the shadows or the dark magic. Moira and Elio decided to keep that a secret to protect the village. Instead, Moira told everyone that the books were just very old, beautiful historical records of the town.

The village loved them. People felt a warm, safe energy coming from the glass box.

Later that afternoon, Marisa walked in from the chocolate shop, followed by Altea from the cigar house. Marisa walked right up to the glass box and gently touched the wood frame.

“I don’t know what it is about these old books,” Marisa said with a smile. “But ever since you put them up here, the village feels lighter. Even my chocolate is tasting sweeter.”

Altea blew a small puff of smoke and nodded. “They are good luck. Old things belong in Speranza.”

Moira looked at Elio, and they shared a quiet, secret smile.

Up on top of the glass box, Toe the black cat was fast asleep. Ashwaganda, the big ginger cat, sat next to him, watching the shop with bright, happy eyes. They were the true guards of the village, but today, they did not have to fight.

The magic was resting, the village was safe, and the tea sanctuary was filled with the perfect warmth of good friends.

Le jardin aux grenouilles d' pépère de Pradons. Nous avions loué un bungalow avec piscine privée dans les environs. L'eau était principalement purifiée au sel. Trois petites grenouilles y vivaient. L'une d'elles venait régulièrement s'asseoir sur moi dans l'eau. Peut-être venaient-elles de ce jardin !

The shadow is the coldness of time.

The tea shop was plunged into a heavy, suffocating silence. The glowing blue light had vanished, leaving only the warm, ordinary flicker of the desk lamp.

Elio stood frozen, staring at the two books on the oak counter. He looked down at his flour-dusted hands, as if realizing for the first time that his culinary skills were entirely useless against ancient magic.

“I am a chef, Moira,” Elio said, his voice barely a whisper. “I use sous-vide machines. I use liquid nitrogen. I do not know how to cook a meal for a magical shadow that wants to eat a village.”

Moira gently stroked Ashwaganda’s head to calm the large ginger cat. “Magic in Speranza is old, Elio. And old things do not want modern tricks. They want memory. They want tradition.”

She carefully reached out and touched the pristine white leather of the new book. The moment her fingers brushed the cover, the book fell open to the center. The pages were pitch black, but slowly, a silver drawing began to trace itself into the paper. It was an illustration of a heavy cast-iron pot hanging over an open wood fire.

Beneath the drawing, a new riddle appeared in sharp, glowing letters:

The shadow is the coldness of time. It must be warmed by the memory of the hearth. Feed it the marrow of the bone, slow-cooked in the tears of the hills. Bind it with the golden sheet, stretched only by human hands, never by iron teeth.

Elio leaned over the counter, his chef’s mind automatically translating the riddle into a recipe.

“The marrow of the bone,” Elio muttered, his eyes tracing the silver words. “That is ossobuco. Veal shanks, rich with marrow in the center. ‘Slow-cooked in the tears of the hills’… that must be the local red wine and the spring water we just found.”

Moira tapped the final line of the riddle. “‘The golden sheet, stretched only by human hands, never by iron teeth.’ The book is very clear, Elio. No machines.”

Elio swallowed hard. “It wants sfoglia tirata al mattarello. Traditional, hand-rolled egg pasta. Stretched with a wooden rolling pin until it is thin enough to see the light through it.” He looked at Moira, a mix of fear and realization dawning on his face. “You were right. The machine has no soul. And the shadow is hungry for a soul.”

“Exactly,” Moira said, closing the white book. She picked up her heavy iron ring of keys. “We cannot use your modern kitchen. It is full of steel and electricity. The magic will reject it. We have to use the old wood-burning stove in the back room of my shop.”

Elio wiped his hands on his apron, suddenly looking determined. The fear was gone, replaced by the sharp focus of a chef preparing for the most important dinner service of his life.

“We need ingredients, Moira. Immediately. I need veal shanks, fresh eggs, fine flour, and the oldest wine in this village.”

“I have the wine in my cellar,” Moira said, moving quickly toward the back of the shop. “And Marisa’s cousin is the butcher. He lives just behind the chocolate shop. I will go wake him up and get the ossobuco. You stay here. Start the fire in the cast-iron stove.”

“Wait,” Elio said, stopping her. “What about the wild mallow we picked? The botanical element?”

Moira looked back at him, her hand on the doorknob. “Leave it. Tonight, we do not innovate. We honor the past.”

Moira ran out into the village square. The sun had completely set, but the darkness falling over Speranza did not feel normal. The shadows in the alleyways seemed too thick, too dense. They looked as if they were slowly creeping forward, stretching across the cobblestones toward the tea shop. The “old hunger” was already waking up.

Ten minutes later, Moira returned with a heavy paper package wrapped in twine from the butcher. When she stepped into the back room of her shop, the air was already thick with heat and the smell of burning oak.

Elio had taken off his chef’s coat. He was standing at the large wooden table, a mountain of yellow flour piled in the center. He cracked six fresh eggs into a well in the middle of the flour and began to beat them with a wooden fork. His movements were fast, precise, and completely traditional.

“I have the meat,” Moira said, placing the heavy cuts of ossobuco on the counter. The marrow inside the bones was perfect and pale.

“Start searing them in the cast-iron pot,” Elio ordered, not looking up from his dough. He was working the flour and eggs together with his bare hands, feeling the elasticity, feeling the life of the pasta. “Brown them in butter, not oil. Then deglaze with your old wine.”

For the next two hours, the back room of La Pagina che Fa le Fusa turned into a furious, focused kitchen. The smell of the ossobuco simmering in wine, rich broth, and crushed tomatoes filled the air, thick and comforting.

Elio took Moira’s heavy wooden rolling pin—the mattarello—and began to stretch the golden dough. He rolled it back and forth, pressing his weight into the wood, turning the pasta until it was a massive, perfectly thin sheet. He was sweating, his arms aching, but he did not stop.

As the stew bubbled and the pasta was sliced into wide, golden ribbons, Ashwaganda let out a low growl from the doorway.

Moira looked toward the front of the tea shop. The normal darkness of the night had vanished. Under the crack of the front door, a thick, freezing black fog was seeping into the room. The shadows on the walls began to twist and grow taller, reaching out like long, hungry fingers.

The temperature in the shop plummeted. The fire in the stove hissed as the cold air hit it.

“Elio,” Moira said, her breath turning to white mist in the air. “It is here. Is the food ready?”

Elio picked up a heavy wooden bowl. He placed a large, steaming piece of ossobuco inside, the marrow glistening in the center of the bone. He surrounded it with the fresh, hand-rolled pasta, completely coated in the dark, rich sauce.

“It is ready,” Elio said, his voice tight. “But how do we feed it?”

It’s that time again! The Indiana State Fair is an annual celebration of Hoosier pride, farming, food, and 4-H, with amusement park rides, cooking demos, concerts by musicians either nearly or formerly popular, and farm animals competing for cash prizes without their knowledge. My wife Anne and I attend each year as a date-day to seek new forms of creativity and imagination within a local context…

…and one splashy theme recurred throughout the various exhibits of arts, crafts, cookery, and antiquing across all participating buildings: the 250th anniversary of July 4th, 1776, generally considered the date of birth of the United States of America. Granted, not all citizens observed the only semiquincetennial party our nation will ever have, particularly among a statistically significant percentage of the terminally online. No, America isn’t perfect and never will be, which is kind of the point, no matter who’s in charge. If you only love people, places, or things that are perfect, then how many absolutely perfect people, places, or things do you genuinely love? If you count more than one, you’ve gotten it wrong.

As it happens, our road trip this year began over the Independence Day weekend and showed us evidence of folks proud to celebrate offline, about which I’ll get to post about here someday when I get caught up on sharing our travelogues, Lord willing. Anne, for one, was excited to see America cross that milestone without preemption by the Second Coming, collapsing under a giant meteor, or being conquered by a conspiratorial Canada/Mexico tag-team invasion. She braked at every roadside attraction that acknowledged its happening and was overjoyed to see that same enthusiasm here at the fair.

The Rabbit Paradox: How Fixing Australian History Handed Power to the Emus

If you could erase one event from history, what would it be?

If humanity had a single, golden lever to undo one moment in time, the gut instinct is always the catastrophic: wars, plagues, assassinations, or the burning of ancient libraries. Yet, history has a cruel way of teaching us that removing a monster often leaves a vacuum for a worse one, and curing a plague early might shift the balance of populations into brutal famines.

If I could erase one single, deceptively small event from the tapestry of time, it would be the 1859 introduction of twenty-four wild European rabbits into Victoria, Australia, by a well-meaning English settler named Thomas Austin.

Austin famously remarked that the introduction of a few rabbits could do little harm and might provide a touch of home, in addition to a spot of hunting. That single afternoon of nostalgic homesickness unleashed what became the fastest mammal invasion in biological history. Within decades, billions of rabbits had swept across the entire continent, stripping away root systems, turning fertile valleys into desolate red dust bowls, starving native marsupials to extinction, and warping an entire nation’s ecology forever. Erasing Austin’s little wooden crate of bunnies would save tens of millions of native lives, protect the fragile topsoil, and spare generations of farmers endless grief.

Yet, tampering with time never goes cleanly.

When the temporal distortion device hummed to life in our subterranean laboratory, the logic felt airtight. We targeted the Victorian docks in October 1859. The mission was surgically simple: intercept the shipping manifest, quietly drop the crate of twenty-four rabbits overboard into the English Channel before departure, and allow the timeline to settle into an era of green, unbroken Australian flora.

The machine whined, a sound like tearing silk, and reality collapsed inward.

The immediate side effect was not silence, but an aggressive, screeching shift across the digital fabric of the universe. In an instant, the timeline tried to stitch its threads back together. Whole economies that had been built around rabbit-proof fencing, Australian agriculture, and outback ecology collapsed and rearranged themselves into new digital systems.

Across modern offices, computer terminals flickered violently. Systems crashed as the cascade of historical variables forced every piece of modern infrastructure to rewrite itself on the fly.

Deep inside a nondescript government office in Melbourne, an overworked web developer named Liam sat frozen in front of his monitor. His screen was screaming in crimson errors. His breath caught in his throat. His fingers hovered over the keyboard, slick with cold sweat.

He had to remember the core principles of building an accessible, unbreakable system before the failure cascade went critical.

Every single page needed an informative, unique title that placed the most important details first. He slammed into the code, hammering out structural markup to convey pure meaning, ensuring screen readers and automated engines would never get lost in a flat wall of visual chaos.

Thirty seconds left.

The screen blinked with an ominous warning: Input Validation Failure.

He had to ensure the forms were forgiving of human error, clearly showing where problems occurred and suggesting corrections instead of locking panicked users behind technical jargon. He added meaningful text alternatives to every operational graphic, ensuring that critical interactive buttons possessed distinct visible states for mouse hover, touch, and keyboard focus.

Ten seconds. The room went pitch black, illuminated only by the frantic white glow of his monitor.

Liam hit the tab key, verifying that every single control could be reached and executed by a keyboard alone, bypassing every broken mouse driver and failing touch panel across the continent. He mapped the high-contrast palettes, ensuring foreground text stood boldly apart from the background.

Three seconds.

He held his breath. The entire room went dead silent. He pressed the final compile key.

The sirens stopped. The screen settled into a crisp, clean, perfectly accessible white interface. The red warnings vanished. The emergency broadcast system was alive and stable.

Liam collapsed backward into his chair, letting out the breath he felt he had held for an eternity. The world was intact. The ecosystem was saved.

The Indiana State Fair is an annual celebration of Hoosier pride, farming, food, and 4-H, with amusement park rides, cooking demos, concerts by musicians either nearly or formerly popular, and farm animals competing for cash prizes without their knowledge. My wife Anne and I attend each year as a date-day to seek new forms of creativity and imagination within a local context…

…and once again the most interesting exhibit was hosted in the Harvest Pavilion: “Rewind: A VHS Revival”. Same as last year’s tribute to LP cover art, the curators started with a simple premise — in this case, “Remember movies on videotape? Those were awesome!” — and didn’t tailor everything to Indiana specifically, so much as it hearkened toward ye olde American entertainment monoculture. They assembled a collection of simulated video-rental store shelves, videotape boxes, movie posters, painted recreations of posters and iconic images, a few educational sections about filmmaking, and so on. Their contributors offered some offbeat choices, so it wasn’t all just Spielberg and Star Wars.

It also contributed to the last few decades’ ongoing cultural fractionalization — now that everyone self-curates at their own paces and caters to their own particularly peculiar preferences, it’s much more challenging nowadays to persuade mainstream audiences to watch the same films at the same time (a few 2026 theatrical success stories notwithstanding).

It’s that time again! The Indiana State Fair is an annual celebration of Hoosier pride, farming, food, and 4-H, with amusement park rides, cooking demos, concerts by musicians either nearly or formerly popular, and farm animals competing for cash prizes without their knowledge. My wife Anne and I attend each year as a date-day to seek new forms of creativity and imagination within a local context.

Most years, we’re all about the food. Each time our favorite part is the “Taste of the Fair” competition, in which vendors showcase ostensibly new dishes in hopes of enticing foodies and/or impressing attendees who seek more to fair-life than eating the same tenderloin again and again and again and again and again and again and again and again. (Not that there’s anything wrong with that!) The TotF lineup is announced weeks in advance so everyone can plan their meals and experiments accordingly.

This year’s Taste of the Fair dishes and drinks numbered 39 in all. We sampled twelve such items during our 7-hour stay and walked off several of those cumulative calories around the fairgrounds and inside the exhibit halls, whose contents we’ll cover in subsequent chapters. Prices ranged from $9 to $15, comparable to the average AMC concession stand. The high prices hadn’t improved over last year, but we mitigated the budgetary strain with funds leftover from last weekend’s Fan Expo Chicago that we reallocated here. I wish we could’ve tried more, but we only attended a single day. I’m told the older we get, the less we should be eating, and the less we can eat.

Last year I shared everything we tried in random order. This year we’re back to ranking them against each other just because I’m awake enough to do it tonight, plus I’m annoyed with so many letdowns here. I won’t be surprised if my extended sugar rush runs out before I finish. I’ve divided our results into two separate lists — nine foods and three drinks. Pitting foods against drinks just felt weird. We’ll start with the grub.

9. Deep Fried Lindor Dubai Chocolate Truffles. This was the corn-dog-shaped serving in our lead photo. Batter-fried snack foods can be the best, but not all ideas can achieve the Deep-Fried Oreos platonic ideal. Dubai chocolate might be one of today’s hot fads among some foodies, but the fryers showed Lindor’s tiny, sugary musket balls no mercy. Anne took the first bite; in retaliation, the liquefied truffles spewed out at her, dribbled on her nice holiday shirt, and flooded the dish. That micro-eruption left us with an empty corn dog husk that’d gotten soggy from the inside. Exact same thing happened to us years ago when we tried deep-fried butter once. ONCE.

Speaking of butter…

8. Butter Dipped Ice Cream Cone. Soft-serve ice cream dipped in hardened chocolate was a scrumptious treat for anyone who ever grew up near a Dairy Queen like I did. Some mad food scientist has invented a new kind of ice cream casing: hardened butter! I love the occasional salty/sweet snacks for their contrast and the way they capture The Duality of Man, but…butter? Like, just butter? There’s a difference between eating the butter pats that came with our school lunches (or was that just me?) and eating a crust made of just butter, as if someone tried to bake a flaky pie crust but a computer glitch deleted the rest of the recipe after the first line.

7. Chile Lime Smoked Chicken Leg. We knew we’d need at least a few protein dishes to balance out the sugar smorgasbord. Smoked meats are awesome when treated properly, or well accessorized — in this case, a perky avocado sauce I’d buy in a small jar if I could. Too bad the sauce drowned out all other seasonings, including the “chile” and “lime” selling points. The sauce also didn’t mask the lukewarm dryness of my drumstick. It didn’t help that the cashier failed at communication and they lost Anne’s order for several minutes until someone in charge finally turned around and wondered why she wasn’t going anywhere.

6. Charlie’s Mexican Street Corn Pizza. A tentative first developmental step toward some future entrepreneur creating an eatery called Pizzeria Elotes, this cheesy corn pizza was inoffensive in every sense — texture and flavor were just-okay, not exactly a challenge to the corn-on-the-cob vendors. The lime was a welcome garnish, but the spice level was zero despite the visible tajin flecks. Anne generally avoids spicy foods, so if she’s complaining that your food isn’t spicy enough, it’s possible some practical joker filled your shakers with sawdust.

5. Junkyard Spam Dog. As if “hot dog made of Spam” weren’t daring enough, this normal-sized wiener is loaded with coleslaw, macaroni and cheese, potato chips, barbecue sauce, and sliced jalapeños. After I discarded the peppers (I have to be in the mood), the coleslaw effectively swallowed all the other toppings. And yet I could totally taste the Spam, because nothing stops Spam from being Spam and marching through all other ingredients like the military meat it is.

4. The S’Mork. This year’s official Taste of the Fair Winner — announced early this very morning before our arrival — is the latest brainstorm from Nitro Hog BBQ, the geniuses behind 2024’s TotF-winning Fried Sugar Biscuit n’ BBQ with Apple Butter Sauce, which is literally The Greatest Taste of the Fair Dish in World History. This year they stuck with their potent salty/sweet foundation — the freshly fried biscuit with sugar coating, their trademark smoked pork, and the optional barbecue sauce — and easily recaptured the glory…except then they went and added a goopy La Brea pile of melting marshmallows and chocolate chips. That lipstick wasn’t quite the right shade for this expertly prepped pig. Making things worse: our plastic forks kept tearing at the flimsy foil under the sandwich and stirring shreds of it into the meat.

3. Strawberry Shortcake. That’s the name on the list, but the menu also called it Strawberry Delight. Anne’s favorite dessert of the day was also the heaviest thing we bought, even outweighing the proteins. Two scoops of ice cream and whipped cream atop, like, two or three pounds of syrupy strawberries with some kind of starchy discs submerged below — shortbread? biscuit? hardtack? — that proved a nifty little treasure-chest of texture once they were unearthed and brought to the surface. The syrup was a little rich for my taste (and I was beyond stuffed by this time), so Anne ate most of it herself. Frankly, I can’t believe she even fell asleep tonight.

2. Soul Train Egg Rolls. Now here’s the spice I was looking for: tightly packed dollops of jerk chicken, Caribbean spiced cabbage, rice and cheese in a crunchy shell and served with an optional packet of Thai chili sauce. The spices exceeded Anne’s tolerance threshold, but great things intertwined for me in these small packages.

1. Vegan HomeRun Sliders. The good folks at Black Leaf Vegan have been offering an alternative to the fair’s traditional farm-animal dominance for at least a good five years or more, but I’ve often failed to reach their faraway northeast-corner spot with any appetite left. This year I made sure to save room and didn’t regret it: I quickly devoured this trio of plant-based patties on faux White Castle buns, topped with slaw, red onions, pickles, some sort of bacon bits (soy?) and copious cheddar sauce (vegan, I assume?). Maybe it made a huge difference that the patties were freshly cooked (though I ended up patiently waiting so long that they apologized and threw in a courtesy drink), but they pulled off a hat trick of perfectly balanced hits of flavor, crunch, and food-group variety. This was the precision creativity we’d hoped to find.

3. Great American Shake. Anne was bound and determined to celebrate the American semiquincentennial cheerfully somewhere in this country in 2026, and the fair did not disappoint her. This extra-large dessert was nothing too fancy, and designed more for looks than complexity — they drizzled red and blue syrups into the glass, filled it with a vanilla shake mixed on the spot (not in a broken McDonald’s shake machine) and capped with whipped cream and a tiny flag. It’s worthy competition to the Dairy Barn across the street, though Anne couldn’t tell what kinds of syrups those were and thinks “red” and “blue” might have also been their flavors.

2. Strawberry Pineapple Twister. The Twisted Drinks stand outside the Indiana Arts Building is always my last stop before we leave the fairgrounds for the day. They were frazzled and running behind today, but eventually I got my refresher for the rush-hour drive home, filled with chunks of actual strawberry and pineapple. For a change of pace, they offered Splenda instead of sugar — not my favorite artificial sweetener, but the antidote I needed to the rest of the day’s excess.

1. Raspberry Sweet Tea Slushie. I’ve never seen all those words in the same clause before. Maybe it was the dehydration talking, or maybe the melange was just that addictive, but with every sip I wanted more more more now now now.

#2 Behind the Scenes Making of Resident Evil (1996) – It has been over thirty years since Resident Evil was first released and today it has grown into a multimedia entertainment franchise still driven by video game productions. Although many video game publications published a lot of articles about the original game from 1996, none of them captured the behind-the-scenes making at Capcom which the YouTube video below features. Even if you are not a Resident Evil fan, I still encourage you to watch it as you can learn a lot about the process, the hard work done by the Japanese and insight shared by Shinji Mikami.

Even though a lot of people got lured by them, I never trusted BuzzFeed and I was never interested with their videos and other online gimmicks. BuzzFeed was also a very questionable participant in journalism no matter what they did to gain credibility. Fortunately for the world, BuzzFeed collapsed and deservedly so. #8 Assorted Pacific Rim Reaction Videos – When Pacific Rim was released in cinemas worldwide in 2013, I never bothered to watch it in the local cinema. Here in the Philippines, there was a lot of pre-release buzz that Manila would appear in the movie and so many local film buffs got excited. The movie eventually grossed over $400 million worldwide through theaters and a lot of people enjoyed its high-quality visuals, intense battles and the special attention to detail invested on the size and scale of the locations. #10 Shallow Focus is a Disease in Movies – There is a new trend that has influence the production of movies in Hollywood (AKA Commiewood) for many years now and it has literally become a disease which made the viewing of movies undesirable. The disease is shallow focus which occurs when the area of sharpness in front of a camera lens is very narrow which results in blurry backgrounds. Shallow focus is being abused in modern-day filmmaking and it is only getting worse.
