A path well royally trodden – framed in the lychgated entrance, the Church of St Mary and St Alkelda in the North Yorkshire village of Middleham, near Leyburn in Wensleydale.
Grade I listed, the ancient church dates from the 13th century and was where Richard, Duke of Gloucester (later Richard III) once worshipped.
King Richard spent several years during his childhood at Middleham Castle and which later became one of his royal homes.

What better way to celebrate Yorkshire day on 1st August than with a yomp up on Ilkley Moor (baht 'at?)

Late summer on a moorland means HEATHER, which is always delightful to see.

Plenty more images from this day, just waltz this way -> https://www.iancylkowski.com/posts/ilkley-moor-west-yorkshire-summer/ 👍

Wide view from the Cow and Calf rocks on Ilkley Moor, looking across a rugged quarry-like gap between tall grey rock faces. Purple heather and golden grasses fill the foreground, while several climbers and walkers are scattered among the rocks and on the sandy ground below. Beyond the cliffs, the landscape opens towards Ilkley beneath a bright blue sky filled with large white and grey clouds. View across Ilkley from White Wells on Ilkley Moor, with the whitewashed stone cottage and its weathered stone roof in the left foreground. A blue flag flies beside the building, while dense green bracken, grasses and wild plants surround a narrow stone path. Beyond the cottage, Ilkley spreads across the valley among trees, with rolling green and brown moorland stretching into the distance beneath a bright blue sky filled with large white and grey clouds. View from Ilkley Crags across a steep, rocky moorland slope covered in purple heather, grasses and bracken. A lone walker in a blue jacket stands among the rocks looking out over the Wharfe Valley, with a winding footpath descending through the hillside below. Ilkley and surrounding woodland spread across the valley floor, while broad green and brown moors rise in the distance beneath a softly clouded sky. View from Ilkley Crags across a dramatic line of sheer grey rock faces descending into the valley, surrounded by dense purple heather, grasses and patches of green bracken. Pale rocky ledges fill the foreground, while a narrow footpath winds along the lower hillside to the right. Beyond the crags, Ilkley and the wooded Wharfe Valley stretch into the distance, framed by rolling moorland beneath a bright sky scattered with large white and grey clouds.

Welcome to north England's ONLY chalk coastline: Flamborough Head and Bempton Cliffs.

Last time I visited this area was 2015, so I was WAY overdue a revisit. Pretty lovely, eh?

There's plenty more photos from this day, just head hither -> https://www.iancylkowski.com/posts/flamborough-east-riding-yorkshire-summer/ 👍

View from the cliffs overlooking Thornwick Bay on the Flamborough coastline in East Riding of Yorkshire, with steep green headlands surrounding a broad rocky beach and pale chalk formations jutting into the calm blue sea beneath a partly cloudy sky. Clifftop view west of Thornwick Bay looking east across the rugged Flamborough coastline, with steep grass-topped chalk cliffs, sea caves and pale rocky platforms extending into calm blue-grey water, and a few houses visible on the distant headland. Low-angle view across large, weathered rocks at Thornwick Bay towards Thornwick Nab, where layered chalk cliffs rise steeply beneath a blue, partly cloudy sky, with a narrow natural opening visible through the rock formation. View west along the Bempton Cliffs, with towering white chalk faces topped by vivid green grass stretching into the distance beside a calm grey-blue sea, beneath a dramatic sky of dark and broken clouds.

A busy summer's day along St Ann's Staith on the Whitby waterfront in North Yorkshire.
I know the town can become a bit rammed at this time of the year, but many of the local businesses depend on the footfall and it would be a totally different kind of Whitby without the holiday makers and day trippers.
Note the 'Dracula Experience' which draws on the town's connection with the 1897 Bram Stoker Gothic horror novel 'Dracula'.
In more recent years, the theme sees two 'Goth Weekends' taking place with a music festival and gathering attendees dressing up in elaborate gothic, steampunk, and Victorian attire.
The narrow historic streets and famous 199 Whitby Abbey steps become something of an open-air catwalk.
On a personal note, the location connects with my love of Cornwall and fondness for a real authentic Cornish pasty, thanks to the Proper Cornish Pasty Co's shop!

A view of St Ann's Staith, part of the North Yorkshire fishing town of Whitby. Seen here from the perspective of the River Esk and crowds of holiday makers and day trippers along the quayside.

A perfectly peaceful scene in Hawes, Wensleydale and the Grade II listed Church of Saint Margaret of Antioch, where in the nearby pasture, 'sheep may safely graze' (cue JS Bach!).
This North Yorkshire market town is associated with the eponymous cheese, made using traditional recipes handed down from French monks in the 12th century.
No small thanks to the stop-motion claymation characters 'Wallace and Gromit', created by Nick Park at Aardman Animations, that Wensleydale cheese is probably known around the world with Wallace famously adoring its taste and flavour and proclaiming to Gromit to it being a particularly "Cracking cheese!"
