Jansson wrote the Moomin books for children, starting in 1945.

Finnish Artist Tove Jansson Was More Than Just the Creator of the Moomins
The #Moomins are beloved the world over, but what do we know of their creator, Tove Jansson?
Artist Tove Jansson was a Finnish (swedish speaking) painter, illustrator, and novelist. Her eclectic mix of graphic line drawings and soft-contoured paintings, range from stoic self-portraits and cartoonish illustrations, to light-filled landscapes. She is perhaps best known for her creation of the The Moomins, a series of books portraying a fictional family of troll-like creatures.

Brought up by artistic parents, Jansson studied art from 1930 to 1938 in Stockholm, Helsinki and Paris: Jansson studied at the University College of Arts, Crafts, and Design in Stockholm until 1933, and at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris in 1938.
Her first solo art exhibition was in 1943. At the same time, she was writing short stories and articles for publication, as well as creating the graphics for book covers and other purposes. She continued to work as an artist and a writer for the rest of her life.
She later found work as a commercial illustrator and political satirist in European periodicals.
Notably, she illustrated Swedish editions of J.R.R. Tolkein’s The Hobbit and Lewis Carroll’s Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland.
Jansson died on June 27, 2001 in Helsinki, Finland.
