Lamia di Babalucchio
The lamia is a small rural building, usually with a quadrangular or rectangular floor plan, characterized by a vaulted roof (often "barrel-vaulted" or "pavilion-vaulted") or sometimes a flat one. Historically, the lamia originated as a temporary shelter for farmers during periods of intense fieldwork or as a storage space for agricultural tools. It is an essential structure, devoid of ornamentation, built with local stone and often whitewashed with lime to reflect the sun and keep the interior cool.
In architecture and traditional rural construction of southern Italy, the terms lamia and lamione identify types of structures made of bare stone or lime that are primarily distinguished by their size, function, and structural complexity.
