[Bikepacking Denmark, Pt. 15] Last day. Forest. Sun. Peace and Quiet. I restarted the fire from last night and toasted my breakfast rolls there. Pretty luxurious.

I’d planned a relatively short (but beautiful) ride straight to Aalborg. One last time in nature. One last time on the trails. And time to reflect on the past few days.

Then there was quite a bit going on in Aalborg. That weekend, they were hosting a kind of regatta for big old sailing ships, and there were thousands of tourists there. Culture shock after 7 days in nature. There was also a big fireworks show that evening, but I didn’t care. I was completely wiped out in my tent and slept.

Early the next day, I took the Flixbus and then the (regional) train back home. ◼︎

In the past, it was the beating heart of the local agricultural economy—a place where grueling labor blended with the social ritual of the harvest.

[Bikepacking Denmark, Pt. 14] After lunch, I headed north-northwest into the backlands. In some places, the terrain was so hilly that I thought I was in the Sauerland. Unfortunately, on one descent, I also wrecked my 3D-printed lamp mount on the aero bars. Luckily, the lamp didn’t drop.

When I got to the shelter site, I was actually—and contrary to expectations—completely alone. It was a strange feeling. After I’d made a fire and then cooked dinner (pasta and grilled dates), three Danes from the area stopped by to drink beer and have a barbecue. Luckily, they were very nice and kept it reasonably quiet when I eventually crawled into my tent.

[Bikepacking Denmark, Pt. 13] Day 7 was tough at first in terms of motivation. The sun was shining, sure, but I’d already reached my actual destination the day before and now just “had to kill some time” somehow. After the first few kilometers, though, I pulled myself together and decided to make it even more of an adventure and exploration tour than usual and stick even less closely to the originally planned route. That turned out well.

I rode right along the Baltic Sea beach for quite a while. It didn’t go quite as smoothly as on the North Sea, because the sand was a bit softer. But it was good enough. And it even offered some extra adventure in the form of two small river mouths. :-D

[Bikepacking Denmark, Pt. 12] And then the moment finally arrived: Skagen! I’d imagined a lonely lighthouse, but there were crowds of people there, and I had to fight my way another 1 km along the beach before I actually reached the northernmost point. But then I felt really proud! :-)

In Skagen, I treated myself to a little feast as a reward. But then my mood took a rapid nosedive. I realized that, contrary to my plans (or rather, contrary to what I’d hoped), I couldn’t take the train back from Aalborg the next day because all the bike spaces were fully booked for the upcoming days.

I then set off for Frederikshavn to do some more research at the train station there. There, I found out that local public transportation wasn’t an option either. So, about 675 km back home by bike? My last resort was Flixbus. It wouldn’t take me all the way home, but at least there was a connection to Flensburg one day later. So I spontaneously extended the trip by a day.

Since it was already quite late by then, I decided to find a place to stay right there in Frederikshavn instead of riding any further.

[Bikepacking Denmark, Pt. 11] Day 6 was destined to be both the highlight of the trip and the biggest letdown.

At first, though, the day started off sunny, and I spontaneously decided to ride right along the beach instead of taking the planned route. There, I saw a small seal in the wild up close for the first time. At first, it just stared at me, but then I must have seemed scary to it, so it crawled into the water and swam away. I named it William. Robbie William.

After that, I continued toward Skagen, mostly on very nice bike paths and trails. The last sight along the way was the “sand-covered church,” of which only the tower remains.

[Bikepacking Denmark, Pt. 8] The air on the morning of day 5 was still damp from the previous day's rain, but it slowly started to clear up. I had to ride a good 10km until I could get something for breakfast.

At a self-service bakery, I got a loaf of sourdough bread that was still warm (they were already out of rolls), and at a kiosk by the beach, I got a coffee to go. While eating on the beach, I watched as fishing boats were pulled from the shore into the water using winches.

Following beautiful trails and paths, I reached the beach between Grønhøj and Løkken, which is open to vehicles. People were certainly taking full advantage of that. Riding on the hard sand, with the sea on my side and the sun at my back, felt really great. Of course, I also took a break to swim and have lunch.

In the last photo, you can already see the Rubjerg Knude Lighthouse on the horizon.

[Bikepacking Denmark, Pt. 7] Day 4 started out with pretty good weather—sunshine and a tailwind—and beautiful, varied trails. I visited a few old fishing villages like Stenberjg, Varupør, and Klitmøller.

By the time I arrived in Nørre Varupør, the sky had already turned overcast. Then, in Klitmøller, it started to rain. According to the rain radar, it was supposed to rain quite heavily but stop again after about two hours. But it didn’t. It just kept raining all afternoon and evening.

The coastal bike path to Hanstholm was still a blast, and afterward, the trail between the coast and the dunes felt almost mystical in the rain (unfortunately, I don’t have any photos of that).

By the time I reached Bulbjerg Rock, I was completely soaked (again). The old bunker and the view were still—or maybe because of the weather—breathtaking.

Sometime in the evening, I finally arrived at my shelter spot, and luckily, there were already people there who had lit the fireplace. No hot shower, but a fire at least!

A building probably constructed in the 1940's or 50's when the highway system was in development, now dilapidated, abandoned and locked. Weeds and rubble line its foundation, its metal roof is rusting and decades old formerly white paint is streaked with stains. An overhang casts a long shadow over a concrete riser running its full frontal width and behind some bushes nature has installed, it appears connected to an ancient concrete silo that's about a third of the height of any serious farm silo. One can only guess at its former ownership and purpose.

[Bikepacking Denmark, Pt. 6] Day 3/4 (cont.). Starting at Bovberg Fyr, the weather actually cleared up for the first time. The wind shifted slightly from the northwest to the west, and the dunes blocked most of it anyway. And there was sunshine!

The trails were so much nicer that way, especially the part right between Ferring Sø and the North Sea.

In Thyborøn, I spent the night with six other bike packers in a shelter in the dunes, almost right by the North Sea. Completely awesome and I slept like a baby :-D

[Bikepacking Denmark, Pt. 5] Day 3 (cont.). After Lyngvig Fyr, it finally stayed dry, but the wind kept getting stronger. In some sections, I couldn’t go faster than 15 km/h, and some beach access paths between the dunes channeled the wind so strongly that I was almost blown off my bike a few times.

@thheine@pixelfed.de was also in the area a few months ago and took much better photos of Blavand Fyr (as well as Lyngvig Fyr and the Henne Mølle Å) than I did. Check them out!
