This is a colour photo in landscape format of a coastal ferry leaving harbour and entering a bank of sea fog. Harstad, Norway (2018). Extending from the left edge of the photo diagonally through the centre and towards the right edge is the ferry that dominates the photo. The starboard half of the stern and starboard side are in view with the camera being three metres above the water, ten metres from the stern and angled to the centre of the vessel. The dark and calm waters of the Vågsfjorden rise from the base of the photo to a little less than the half way up level. The only thing disturbing the water is the gentle, rippled wake from the ship moving forward at a dead slow speed. The ship has a black hull that stretches upwards four metres above the water. Extending aft of the bow are two long rows of portholes set into the hull, one row is only a metre above the waterline. The next row is a few metres above and stretches aft a little further. Above the black hull is a thick red strip

A car and passenger ferry on its route from Xiamen island to the Chinese mainland, taken in 2018 for today.

We're on one side of a wide stretch of calm water, looking across to a city skyline of skyscrapers on the distant shore backed by a more distant range of hills. It's a bright day with a little cloud and haziness in the air so the sky appears pale and the landscape over the water is similarly faint. Our focus is on a reasonably small car and passenger ferry passing to the left in the middle distance. The vessel has white upper decks over a hull that might once have been a deep blue but is now closer to a slate colour with lots of signs of neglect in the form of scratched paintwork and rust stains. The main decks are bunched in the centre of the ferry and there are four of them, tapering slightly towards a small bridge on the very top, and each with some open deck spots for passengers to enjoy the view. We can see a handful of people in gaps on the decks but more are gathered towards the aft behind a gap where the red container on a truck stands out for its colour.

For here's the Brittany Ferries vessel, Mont St Michel, which sails a regular service between our home city of Portsmouth and Caen in the north of France. This was taken as she was heading to the UK while we were on our way out aboard a Virgin cruise ship in 2021.

It's the evening, just after the sun has set over the horizon but while there's still light in the sky. We're on a cruise ship heading out to sea. The water is calm and grey, textured with shallow shadows of ripples to resemble the skin of an elephant stretched taut. The sky is pale and a colourless grey at the top that blends into a pale yellow nearer the horizon where a featureless flat sheet of darker grey cloud gathers. A vehicle and passenger ferry is passing us a couple of hundred metres away, heading to the left and leaving a trough of white foam in its wake. The ferry is white with blue trim on its hull above the water line and to mark the main deck area. "Brittany Ferries" is written on the side of the vessel and the company's stylised logo of a blue and orange wave is next to the wording also present on the funnel housing towards the ship's aft.
