For here's the Brittany Ferries vessel, Mont St Michel, which sails a regular service between our home city of Portsmouth and Caen in the north of France. This was taken as she was heading to the UK while we were on our way out aboard a Virgin cruise ship in 2021.

It's the evening, just after the sun has set over the horizon but while there's still light in the sky. We're on a cruise ship heading out to sea. The water is calm and grey, textured with shallow shadows of ripples to resemble the skin of an elephant stretched taut. The sky is pale and a colourless grey at the top that blends into a pale yellow nearer the horizon where a featureless flat sheet of darker grey cloud gathers. A vehicle and passenger ferry is passing us a couple of hundred metres away, heading to the left and leaving a trough of white foam in its wake. The ferry is white with blue trim on its hull above the water line and to mark the main deck area. "Brittany Ferries" is written on the side of the vessel and the company's stylised logo of a blue and orange wave is next to the wording also present on the funnel housing towards the ship's aft.

This is a sunrise photo in landscape format of two passing container ships, one leaving port, one arriving. Vancouver, BC (2017). The light blue and rippled harbour water rises from the base of the photo upwards to the halfway up level. In the foreground and to the left of centre is the bow and forward section of a large container ship entering port. The ship is viewed in profile with the bow and forward ten to fifteen metres section in view and with the camera positioned about thirty metres away. The ship is underway from left to right at a very slow speed, that is hardly causing any wake. The vessel is in shadow but a few details are visible. Aft of the bow on the upper part of the hull is the vessel's name 'MSC LISA' with a short white mast on the deck above. Behind are a number of multi coloured '40 foot' shipping containers. Beyond the MSC LISA is a further container ship that is departing port and underway from right to left. Again, underway at such slow a speed that only the sl

This is a colour photo in landscape format of a large container ship underway and leaving port at sunrise with a tug departing to one side and a lighthouse ahead. Port of Los Angeles, California (2018). Extending upwards from the base of the photo to less than the quarter up level is a calm and mirror like, light blue, harbour water. Stretching from the right edge of the photo, going left and through the centre to towards the right side of the photo is our container ship. The ship is viewed obliquely with the stern and port (left) side in view and is underway from right to left. The ship fills three-quarters of the height of the photo, three-quarters of the width and is viewed from about ten metres away. Only the port side of the stern is in view, the starboard side is beyond the right edge of the image. Vi drar med oss Spårvagnen som kallade den, Rautaruukki, som gick mellan Holmsund och Åbo kanske.

En stående bild på en isbrytare som drar ett annat fartyg genom isen. Bilden är tagen från däck på sidan. Relingen är mörkblå och överdelen på fartygen gul. Det följande fartygen har ett mörkblått med röd nederdel skrov med en vit rand. Is på havet och en molnig himmel.

This is a colourful seascape photo in landscape format of the anchorage in the Singapore Strait with multiple anchored cargo ships together with the morning sun only a few degrees above the horizon. Singapore (2017). The relatively calm sea with only small wavelets disturbing the surface, rises upwards from the base of the photo to the halfway up level where there is a crisp horizon dividing the sea from the sky. In the centre of the photo is the stern of a medium sized mixed cargo ship, at anchor. The view is slightly oblique with the stern and port side in view and at a distance of about five hundred metres and with the height of the ship being about a quarter of the height of the image. The ship is partially in shadow though the stern superstructure is clearly defined with multiple bright lights illuminating the four visible decks and with the wheelhouse on top. A boat rather than a ship for but who cares? This was from 2014 and a long weekend spent in Kent, based at Margate, but this was from the shore at Deal where we stopped on the way back from visiting Dover Castle and the cliffs.

A portrait orientation shot taken on a bright, sunny day with a few patches of puffy white cloud in the deep blue sky. We're looking out to sea over a short ridge of a short beach of shingles. The water is flat to the horizon and of a colour that suggests the water is shallow. On the beach there are railway sleepers arranged to form a slightly haphazard path towards the water. Near the water's edge, on the sleepers and raised slightly on curved runners to allow for movement over the wooden beams, there is a small pleasure or fishing boat facing inland. Its hull is white with red accent colours on the edges and the hull has a nameplate reading "Morning Haze" on either side of the prow. On the deck there's a bridge area in red with glass windows all around for a clear view. Spotlights are mounted on the bridge and on a small mast sticking from the top around which there is a Union Flag hanging limply due to the lack of any wind.
