This is a high contrast abstract, black and white photo in portrait format of the tower section of a historic cantilever road bridge brightly lit by the still low morning sun with a clear and cloudless sky rendered jet black. 59th Street Bridge, NYC (2012). The camera is angled steeply upwards at a section of the tower of this steel cantilever bridge. The white lattice and truss metal work is brightly lit by the just risen morning sun. The structure is an orderly jumble of straight lengths of steel, mostly trusses made up from metal formed into lattices and then riveted into a long box like trusses. Some of the lengths are vertical, some horizontal and a few diagonal. Just visible spanning the top are long lengths of steel plating, all of the lengths closely spaced together and extending from the anchorage, on land, over the towers to the far anchorage with vertical struts descending down and supporting the road deck below, which in this case is hidden below the base of the photo.

The is a dawn colour photo in landscape format of a small coastal cargo ship being towed backwards along a city river surrounded by high-rise apartment buildings with the raised Brickell Avenue bascule road bridge ahead. Miami River, Florida (2012). The lower 10% of the image is filled with dark and slightly rippled river water. Extending from the right edge of the photo to the centre is the aft section of the small to medium sized cargo ship, with the stern portion of the medium blue hull and white superstructure in view. The ship fills the entire height of the image, half the width and is viewed from 10m away. The blue hull, while clean is very dented with numerous ribs visible around the depressions in the hull. Above the rounded stern is the accommodation and wheelhouse superstructure with 3 decks of small square windows below the wheelhouse. EuroTripping – Lucerne

On our “European Pretzel” this past summer, we decided to explore Lucerne after our hike down to the town of Engelberg (the topic of last week’s post) before heading back to our home base just outside Basel.

We only spent a short time wandering about but we did cross both covered bridges over the river Reuss and meandered by some of the painted facades in the Old Town and I found myself quite charmed.

Here are some images shot while strolling around Lucerne, Switzerland back at the end of June.

The summer is over.
I usually bike in the mornings, being on the 50th north parallel, the sunrise hour changes so much between summer and winter... but this last Friday I could tell the summer finished from the biking perspective, I got to see the sunrise while biking.
There are 4 bridges at the moment there: one for trains, one for the metro, one new for cars and bikes, one old that will be dismantled for cars.
